Mandya: Pourakarmika commits suicide; claims harassment by officials in death note

Mandya: An incident where a pourakarmika committed suicide alleging harassment from town council officials has been reported from Muddur here.

The pourakarmika, Narayana, was allegedly forced to climb down a manhole by council official Murugesh and health inspector Jasim Khan and clean sewage with his bare hands.

A town council worker Srinivas was terminated from employment after the officials suspected him to have revealed Narayana’s incident to news media.

Opposing Srinivas termination workers union had filed a complaint with the town council and Safai Karamcharis commission.

Enraged by this, the officials threatened and harassed Narayana to make a statement that he had voluntarily descended into the manhole and cleaned it.

Depressed by the constant harassment from the officials Narayan committed suicide by hanging himself in his house

In his death note, Narayana has named council official Murugesh, health officer Jasim Khan and others.

Narayan’s dead body is currently undergoing post-mortem examination in the morgue of government hospital at Maddur.

Protests were held by the president of the pourakarmika union Naganna Gowda against the officials.
