Mangaluru: The names of candidates for the position of mayor and deputy mayor for the next term of Mangaluru City Corporation will likely be finalised in the next two days.
Mangaluru South and North MLA will be holding a meeting on Saturday with BJP’s State president Nalin Kumar Kateel and BJP’s district president Sudarshan Moodabidri to finalise the names of the candidate.
Present Mayor Diwakar Pandeswar’s term ends on February 28. The election for the new mayor and deputy mayor will be held on March 2. Reservations for the 33rd term of mayor and deputy mayor have already been announced, with the mayorship reserved for the general category and deputy mayor reserved for the general woman.
It is being reported that the next mayor is likely to be from the Mangaluru South assembly constituency and the name of the Corporation’s senior member Premananda Shetty is doing the rounds. However, the party’s decision will be known only after the meeting.
Corporation officials informed Udayavani that even though the current mayor and deputy mayor’s term ends on February 28 they will continue in the position till March 2 when elections will be held.
Speaking on the issue, MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, “The mayoral and deputy mayoral candidate for the city is yet to be finalized. The BJP district president will hold a meeting this weekend on the instructions of the BJP president. We will finalize the candidate’s name at the meeting. On March 2, the elections for these posts are scheduled, and we have no confusion regarding the candidates. The party’s decision on it will be final.”
