Mangaluru: In many police stations of the city, vehicles seized by police are rotting due to archaic laws and other issues preventing them from being disposed of.

The vehicles are kept in an open area, causing them to rust after being soaked in the rains and weeds growing everywhere over them.

Most of the vehicles are not usable now after years of damage.

Most vehicles kept here were involved in accidents with cases on their owners pending in courts. They cannot be returned to them until the cases are disposed of.

City’s Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that those vehicles that were used in the commission of a crime cannot be given back to their owners without an explicit order from the courts.

Experts are of the opinion that the government must bring out clear and comprehensive guidelines in dealing with seized vehicles. The new vehicles scrap policy by the Central government must address this issue.
