Bengaluru: Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Cabinet has approved the formation of a three-member high-level committee headed by a retired judge to look into the issue of reservations being demanded by many communities in the State.

Speaking at a news conference, he said that if the demands were accepted, then total reservations would cross the 50% threshold. In the Indira Sahani case, the Supreme Court had ordered that total reservations should not exceed 50 per cent. Hence, the committee has been formed to find solutions within the law and the constitution.

“The committee will consist of one judge, one administrative officer and one social scientist. The chief minister has been given the authority to appoint these three. No time has been fixed for them,” the minister added.

The minister also said in the Cabinet meeting it was decided that Rs 5,000 incentive given to those in Karnataka Civil Service for computer education will be discontinued and lecturers in government Ayurvedic colleges will be paid salaries as per AICT norms.

“The Cabinet had also approved the 2009 salary revision for the law department and Rs 457 crore has been sanctioned to fill 1700 ponds in Maski taluk,” he added.

“There were no discussions starting an investigation regarding Ramesh Jarkiholi. Presently, Cubbon Park Police Station personnel are investigating the case,” he said.
