Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has taken the initiative of installing body cameras on ticket checkers in order to maintain transparency and rectify confusions regarding bus tickets.

This initiative has now been extended to the Mangaluru and Puttur divisions of the Corporation.

Many altercations are reported due to confusion regarding tickets. Ticket checkers are accused of not checking properly and filing complaints against ticket issuers.

Also, there were allegations that sometimes ticket issuers would not give tickets to passengers.

Hence, the Corporation decided to adopt a new strategy to overcome these problems.

There are 10 ticket checkers in the KSRTC’s Mangaluru division. Body cameras for them have already been sanctioned and 2 body cameras are presently operational.

In the Puttur division, body cameras have been given to 5 ticket checkers.

Under this new initiative, body cameras will be installed on the shirt pockets of the ticket checkers. The cameras will be on from the time the ticket checker boards a bus, checks tickets and alights.

According to officials, the video recorded through the cameras will be stored for about a month. If any discrepancy is found in ticket checking, then Corporation officials will review the video.

Body cameras were first installed on BMTC ticket checkers where in the first phase 80 body camera were bought.

This initiative has already been implemented in KSRTC, NEKRTC and NWKRTC.

“In order to maintain transparency during ticket inspections, 10 body cameras have already been received by Mangaluru KSRTC division. Currently, 2 of them are operational. Soon all of the cameras will be in operation,” said Kamal Kumar, KSRTC Mangaluru Division Traffic Controller.
