Mangaluru: HC permits resuming of SmartCity works

Mangaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ordered resuming of SmartCity works in the city.
A Public Interest Litigation was filed in the High Court stating that the city was not properly managing the construction waste generated during the SmartCity works. The court had ordered discontinuation of all the works until arrangements for construction waste management was found.
As a result of this order, 34 types of works were shut down.
Then in February, a team of experts from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) visited Mangaluru to review the SmartCity works. They declared that the waste disposal is indeed not adequate and presented certain conditions for the SmartCity works to resume.
Accordingly, the SmartCity project submitted an assurance to the High Court on following the recommendations by NEERI and the High Court on Monday ordered the city to continue the SmartCity works.
As monsoons are to begin in the next two months, the big challenge, for now, is to complete stopped works before the rains.
