Mangaluru: Wild creatures ingesting plastic is no news but in a gut-wrenching incident at Mangaluru, a fish was found with a stomach full of plastic.
The incident came to light when an employee of a fish shop at Attavar was cleaning a Reef codfish, It is said that a plastic bag filled with paper-like contents, weighing around 10 kg was retrieved from the fish’s stomach. They have shared a video on social media, talking about how people throw plastic and waste residuals into the sea and other water bodies which directly affects climate change.
Dr. Senthilvel, Dean, College of Fisheries in Mangaluru spoke about how plastic mixes with the seawater and changes into small particles which are then eaten by fish.
He further added that when fishermen go fishing into the sea, they come back with about 40% plastic which gets caught in the net along with the fish. According to the dean, this is one of the reasons why there is a decrease in the number of Bhutai/Sardine fish
