Mangaluru: A gang of five people were arrested from BC Road, Padubidri and the city here for involvement in the February 22 robbery of Rs 16.2 lakhs money from a scooter rider.

The police, in the course of their investigation, found out that stolen cash was hawala money.

The scooter rider had complained to the police on March 4 even though the robbery happened on February 22.

The complainant is a hawala operator and part of a bigger hawala network.

In his complaint he had stated that the robbed cash was supposed to be used for his niece’s marriage, however, police found no records of a planned marriage of any of his relatives.

Soon later, the complainant and his family were missing from their residence.

On the other hand, the five arrested by police for the robbery are subordinate agents in the hawala network.
