Mangaluru: The city experienced heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightning lashed the city late on Monday, March 29 night.

It was the first summer rain in the city, though the areas on the foot of the Western Ghats in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received the rain earlier this season.

Two cars were damaged in Mulihitlu area in the city after an electricity pole fell, snapping power cables, while some trees came down in Hat Hill and Kodical areas in the city. The compound wall of a private hospital on Falnir Road partially collapsed due to rainfall.

In Bondel, Kavoor, Marakada and parts of Kunjathabail, petty shops suffered damages with traffic barricades getting destroyed. In some parts of the city, extensive damage occurred with Dhwaja Stambham (flagstaff) of two Daivasthanas being destroyed. The strong winds uprooted trees and caused the flex boards to fall on the ground.

Many other areas in the city went without power supply.

Fishing boats that had venturened into the sea earlier also returned back to the shore.
