Mangaluru: The Black Fungus disease has now also hit coastal Karnataka.

In Dakshina Kannada, seven cases of the fungal infection have been reported along with 2 deaths.

As per information from the district administration, two of the patients with the fungus have already undergone surgery.

The Black Fungus disease has been declared as a notified disease by the State government. In Dakshina Kannada district Wenlock Hospital has been designated as the treatment centre for the disease.

“People of the district need not worry about this disease and continue to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Importantly, those in home isolation and those who have recovered from the virus must check for symptoms such as facial pain, irritable nasal secretion, nasal stiffness and eye symptoms (eye oedema, eye irritation, any visual impairment). If you note any of these symptoms then contact the nearest health centre immediately,” said Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra KV.

In the Udupi district, two people were diagnosed with the fungal infection – a 60-year-old woman from Santekatte and a 45-year-old male from Kaup.

These are the first two cases reported in the district.

Both are being treated at Udupi’s Adarsh Hospital. The woman is on a ventilator.
