Mangaluru: The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) along with two local NGOs and in partnership with the Mangaluru City Corporation has been studying waste plastic leakages from the city’s Solid Waste Management systems.
The survey is being conducted under the project “Waste Wise Cities: Tackling Plastic Waste in the Environment.”
As part of the project, UN-Habitat will map the plastic waste flows and assess the potential waste plastic leakage from cities waste management systems to provide pathways in increasing waste plastic collection using the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT).
The UN body had launched the project in two cities each of Ethiopia, India and Kenya. In India, Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram have been selected for the study.
The project is funded by the multi-national NGO Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW).
