Bengaluru: A paediatric physiotherapist here who recovered from COVID-19 has been diagnosed with both Black (mucormycosis) and Green (aspergillosis) Fungus – a first in the country.
The fungal growth in the patient was detected after he was admitted to a Mysuru hospital where surgery was performed on him to clear the fungal growth in his nose.
Surgeons who performed surgery on him said that he was treated in time otherwise the fungus would have spread to the brain and eyes.
They explained that the main cause of the fungal infection is necrotising (tissue death) sinusitis (inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses) caused by a COVID-19 variant.
The patient was a diabetic, hence was administered steroids which helped further the growth of the fungus.
