Menstruating women ‘denied’ jabs in some parts of Karnataka

Bengaluru: Health workers in North Karnataka have been reportedly asking menstruating women to seek jabs five days after their cycle.

Reportdly, health workers at the vaccination centres in a few districts of North Karnataka have been telling women that they will have to face side effects if inoculated while on periods.

This happened in Raichur, Belagavi and Bidar districts in Karnataka.

In Raichur, some health workers, without any recorded data of post-vaccination complications, told women that the shot might lead to heavier bleeding and fatigue and they should wait for the periods to end, according to activist Vidhya Patil.

Meanwhile,Raichur deputy commissioner R Venkatesh Kumar said,”There are no such directions from the government, and women are being administered vaccines.”

It may be recalled thet in April the Child and Family Welfare Department had done campaigns to create awareness and quash the misconceptions that women on periods shouldn’t get inoculated.

The government had also debunked the theories that circulated on social media which said women should take vaccines only five days before and after the monthly menstrual cycle and not while on periods.
