Mangaluru: In view of foreign students overstaying their term of education in Bengaluru and Mangaluru and involving in drugs peddling, police have decided to increase surveillance of foreign students in these cities.
College managements have already activated the existing Drugs Prevention Committee and Anti Drugs Squad in their campuses in wake of police reports that drug dealing is taking place targeting college students in the city.
Drug peddlers have been successful in delivering drugs to some students, although there were no students on college campuses or hostels during the lockdown.
In many cases, some links in the drugs network have been cut off due to the timely operation of the police.
Mangaluru Police have already arrested foreign nationals from Bengaluru in connection with drug sales.
These foreign drug peddlers have contact with student peddlers from Mangaluru and Kasaragod.
Among those arrested by police were two medical college students.
“Awareness campaigns have already been launched against drugs use. Medical colleges are not under the university’s jurisdiction. The UGC has also suggested creating an Anti-Drugs Committee for 207 colleges. Students from 38 countries are also in our colleges and are being monitored,” said vice-chancellor of Mangalore University Professor PS Yadapadithaya.
“A network that supplies synthetic drugs and marijuana to college students is being investigated. We have learnt that a huge amount of synthetic drugs are entering the city. Operations are being conducted to reduce the likelihood of drugs reaching students,” said DCP in Mangaluru Police Hariram Shankar.
