A Shiv Sena leader and Kalyan-based businessman, who recently bought a Rolls Royce car worth Rs 8 crore, has been booked for electricity theft of around Rs 35,000.
The officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) filed a complaint and a case was lodged against Sanjay Gaikwad at the Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan.
The sources informed that the MSEDCL officials learned in March about electricity theft at a construction site run by Gaikwad in the Koksewadi area of Kalyan East. Following the lead, a bill of Rs 34,840 was sent to Gaikwad and he was asked to pay a penalty of Rs 15,000.
The officials from MSEDCL filed a police complaint against him for power theft on June 30 as Gaikwad failed to pay the bill along with the penalty amount for three months.
MSEDCL in a release said, “On July 12, Gaikwad paid a sum of Rs 49,840, which included Rs 34,840 for power theft and Rs 15,000 as settlement amount,”
Gaikwad however claimed that allegations leveled against him by MSEDCL were incorrect and maintained that he wasn’t involved in any power theft.
