Bengaluru: A gang of five people, including two women, allegedly cheated an 86-year-old man of Rs 94,000 in Vijayanagar, Bengaluru.
The elderly man was reportedly cheated under the pretext of a ‘senior citizen benefit scheme’, through which he was told he had been sanctioned Rs 3.5 lakh.
The man claimed that the gang would call him and demand the money as service charges.
At first, he got a call from a person named Sonia Singh who informed him that he had been awarded Rs 3.5 lakh under the senior citizen scheme. After which another woman named Anamika Sharma called him to get his bank account details.
In March 2021, the elderly man received another call from a man demanding Rs 20,999 towards the service charge. After the victim transferred the amount, two other accused called him up to update him on the scheme’s approval. The elderly man then tried to contact the team, Anamika informed him that the money will be transferred soon.
Two months later another man named Sudeep Tyagi called him and demanded Rs 73,000 after which another individual called him and demanded Rs 50,000 which raised concern in the victim’s mind.
