Mangaluru: An Assistant Town Planning Officer (ATPO) in the Mangaluru City Corporation was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 34 lakhs after being found guilty of holding disproportionate assets.

In 2007, Deputy Lokayukta and his team found out that ATPO BP Shivaraju had acquired assets worth Rs 38 lakhs disproportionate to his income and registered a case.

The Third District and Sessions Court here on July 26 found Shivaaraju to be guilty of the crime.

Shivaraju later requested the court to reduce his conviction on health grounds but the Special Public Prosecutor made the argument that as it is a corruption case the mandated sentence in such cases must be imposed.
