Basavaraj Bommai appointed as K’taka Chief Minister

Bengaluru: Senior BJP leader and Karnataka Home, Law, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the Yediyurappa-led cabinet Basavaraj Bommai has been appointed as the Chief Minister on Karnataka on Tuesday, July 26.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the legislature party here.
After the meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board, the final decision on the new Chief Minister was made by the party leaders.
Basavaraj Bommai belongs to the Sadara Lingayat community. He is a close confidant of BS Yediyurappa and hails from the ‘janata pariwar’.
Bommai previously served as Minister for Water Resources and Cooperation in the Government of Karnataka.
He is the son of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, S. R. Bommai. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he started his political career with the Janata Dal.
He was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, twice in 1998 and 2004 from Dharwad local authorities constituency. He left the Janata Dal (United) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in February 2008. In the 2008 Karnataka state elections, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Shiggaon constituency in the Haveri district.
Bommai an industrialist by profession, is widely acclaimed for his contributions to innumerable irrigation schemes and deep knowledge regarding Irrigation matters in Karnataka. He is also credited with implementing India’s first 100% piped irrigation project at Shiggaon in Haveri district of Karnataka.
