Mangaluru: 40 students arrested in 7 months for ragging

Mangaluru: Over the past seven months in 2021, cases of ragging has increased at some institutions in the city here with 40 students been booked and detained in various police stations.

It was reported that 90 per cent of the students committing ragging and the victims are mostly Kerala-based students.

After ragging cases were reported in the months of January and February city police commissioner issued a directive to take stringent action if such incidents recur.

However, cases of ragging increased after July when Unlock 2.0 process started and colleges, hostels and PGs were reopened.

Ragging Prevention Committees in colleges have been issued alerts by the police that if ragging cases reoccur then action will be taken against the concerned college administration.

In some colleges, incidents of professors and deans been beaten and threatened for stopping ragging have also been reported.

Speaking on the issue Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said, “If the necessary precautions are not taken to prevent ragging in colleges, cases will be filed against the governing body of such colleges.”
