Karnataka has second highest number of leopards in country, states report

Bengaluru: Karnataka is now home to 1,783 leopards, the second-highest in the country.

According to the ‘Status of Leopards, Co-predators and Megaherbivores in India’ report by the Wildlife Institute of India, the State follows Madhya Pradesh which has the highest number of these big cats at 3,421.

Maharashtra comes at third with 1,690 leopards.

The Kali Tiger Reserve has been reported to have the highest number of leopards. They are also present in good numbers in Nagarhole and Bandipur tiger reserves.

The report also states that leopards being adaptive carnivores are spread across many forest areas in the State with a few of them found in scattered parts of Ramanagara, Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts.
