Bengaluru: A PhD student who was staying in the hostel at IISc is suspected to have died by suicide after consuming a chemical substance in his room.
The deceased youth hails from Kolkata and had been staying in the hostel for the last three years, sources said.
As per his friends and classmates, he was facing some health-related issues and was often visiting doctors at Nimhans.
He was found dead inside the room and the incident came to light when his hostel mates accompanied by security personnel broke open the door after getting no response from inside.
He left behind a suicide note saying he was depressed in life. Police shifted the body to MS Ramaiah hospital for postmortem. The body was handed over to his parents on Monday, September 13.
Police have also sent the student’s viscera samples to the forensic science laboratory.
“The student was pursuing PhD from the department of organic chemistry. We express our condolences to the family and friends of the student. The mental health and well-being of our students and community members are of critical importance, especially given the prevailing Covid-19 situation. We urge the IISc community members to reach out and seek help …,” IISc said in a statement.
Suicide is preventable. If you get any such thoughts, consult or seek expert help.
