Engineers Day 2021: History and significance

Every year on September 15, National Engineer’s day is celebrated in India, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. The day is celebrated to recognize and honor the achievements of the great engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. To commemorate the great work of engineers and to encourage them for improvement and innovation, National Engineers’ Day.

Sir  M Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, and this year marks the 160th birth anniversary of M Visvesvaraya. Since 1968, India has celebrated Engineers day on this day every year.

Sir M Visvesvaraya completed his school education in his hometown and later went to study Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Madras. Later he changed his career path and graduated and pursued civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.

He played a crucial role in constructing dams, reservoirs and hydro-power projects in India.

He even patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune.  Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Karnataka and the flood protection system of Hyderabad are among his high architect projects.

He played an important role in the foundation of Government Engineering College at Bangalore in 1917. It was later renamed after him as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).

The government awarded him with India’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1955.
