Bengaluru: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday that the state government has spent Rs 20,060 crore on road works in Bengaluru in the last five years.

He made the revelation while responding to a query by Congress member P.R. Ramesh in the ongoing monsoon session of the Upper House of the state legislature.

He also admitted that out of over 11,000 km of roads in the city, just 1,344.34 km are motorable.

“I agree that roads in Bengaluru are discussed no matter which government is in power. We elected representatives get a lot of criticism,” he added.

Mr. Ramesh said that Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore for 1 km has been spent on maintenance, and these roads have to be in good condition for at least five years as per the IRC guidelines.

Bommai said that he would conduct a road maintenance audit to monitor and check the money spent on roads , estimates when it started and final cost, maintenance history, potholes. Also, would seek responses from contractors, officials and every person involved in the works to keep a watch on the amount spent on these projects.
