Bengaluru: The Karnataka state government has revised the assessment system for undergraduate courses. This has been done to introduce the National Education Policy (NEP) for higher education from the current academic year.

The new assessment pattern was approved at the State Higher Education Council meeting with vice-chancellors of state-run universities recently.

Prof. B. Thimmegowda, vice president of the State Higher Education Council clarified that under the new system, the portion of internal assessment marks would be increased from 30 percent to 40 percent. The term-end examination will account for 60 percent. “Similarly, the internal score and test score for practical subjects will be 50 each,” he added.

However, some vice-chancellors were opposed to the idea of raising the marks for internal assessment. Bangalore University vice-chancellor Prof Venugopal pointed out that the move could lead to favoritism. “Students should not be discriminated against. There has to be a standard for assigning internal assessment scores based on exceptional learning outcomes,” he added.
