Bengaluru: A special court on Thursday increased the quantum of punishment awarded to two convicts in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case from seven years to rigorous life imprisonment.

The convicts — Ahmed Jamali and Aftab Alam, said to be members of Indian Mujahideen had been awarded the seven-year sentence by the sessions court in June 2020 after they pleaded guilty to the crime.

The CCB police had challenged the verdict in the high court which then directed the session court to review the sentence.

Around 15 people were injured in the explosion that took place outside the Chinnaswamy stadium ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on April 17, 2010. The police had managed to deactivate another bomb that was placed near the stadium.

The police at the time had said that the blasts were caused by low-intensity crude bombs triggered by timers.
