Kurugodu: In a case of farm distress-related suicide, a young farmer allegedly ended his life by consuming poison after his crops were destroyed due to unseasonal rains.

The victim has been identified as M Mohan from Madire village here.  Sources said that Mohan had incurred huge losses due to crop damage in the recent unseasonal rains.

Unable to bear the stress, it is alleged that the farmer consumed poison on Thursday night. He had been rushed to the Ballari VIMS Hospital in a critical condition for poisoning, but could not be saved and died on Friday morning without responding to treatment.

It is gathered that Mohan had borrowed huge sums of money for growing chillies on the 11.9 acres of land owned by his mother Shailamma. Sources said that Mohan had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakhs from an agriculture co-operative society for crop inputs. He had also taken private loans from several others. It is suspected that He must have taken the extreme step due to the stress and worry over repaying such a large amount.

The deceased farmer is survived by his wife and three children.

A case has been registered in this regard at the Kurugodu police station.
