Mangaluru: Locals to reconstruct ‘demolished’ Shiva temple

Mangaluru: Locals of Vittalakody Banottu have decided to reconstruct a Shiva temple which was demolished in the 1960s by authorities to lay railway tracks between Mangaluru and Hassan.

The remains of Lord Umamaheshwara temple were discovered recently and the temple is said to be 800 years old. To reach the spot, one has to take a right turn at Mani on the road to Puttur from Kalladka via Mani.

The temple services were being carried out by the Kobrimatha Bannintaya family, Noojibail Brahmin community, and Kodaje Choorya lineage. It is said that no one belonging to the Choorya family is alive now.

M V Pai, Sadashiv Achar, Ramesh Kainthaje from Mani, Thota Narayana Shetty, Narayana Rai Banottu, Ravi Sharma Kukkarabettu are planning to rebuild the temple.
