A 9-member committee of the state legislature, headed by BJP MLC N Ravikumar will be looking into the issue of dress code, which restricts entry of any member or visitor to their premises if they are found wearing any Indian traditional dress or non-formal attire.

Notably, this is not the first time that Karnataka is attempting to do away with the dress code culture. Similar attempts were made in 2013 under BJP regime and later during Siddaramaiah’s tenure. But nothing materialised so far.

Several recreation clubs in Karnataka follow a dress code and restrict the entry of visitors if they are found to be wearing veshti (dhoti), any Indian attire, informal/casual clothing, and also chappals.

Stating that insisting on following a particular dress code is not right and needs to end, BJP MLC N Ravikumar questioned, “Why should someone impose restrictions on what we wear, when the dress is comfortable and decent?”

The committee, he informed, will put forth its recommendation to the government after touring the clubs across the state once COVID cases drop. There have been complaints against a few clubs. The committee will also check for other violations, including running bars without permission. We will also try to adopt best practices followed by clubs in other states, ” he added.
