9 persons returning to Andhra from Bellary killed as lorry rams into SUV

Anantapur/Bellary: Nine people lost their lives in a ghastly road accident in Anantapuramu district on Sunday, police said.

The accident happened at Kottalapalli on the Anantapuramu-Bellary National Highway. The occupants of the SUV were returning to their native village at Uravakonda from Bellary in Karnataka when a speeding lorry rammed into their vehicle, police sources said.

The SUV was so mangled that it became difficult to remove the bodies, the police said.

A local BJP leader was said to be among the dead. Besides, two other men, six women, and a boy were killed, the police said.

The deceased were all relatives. According to reports in media outlets, Uravakonda police have identified eight of the nine deceased as Venkatappa from Nimbagallu village, Ashok, Radhamma, and Saraswati from Bommanakal village, Shivamma from Pillalapalli village, Subhadramma from Rayaladoddi village, Swati and Jahnavi from Latthavaram. the identity of the child was not immediately known.

The bodies were sent for an autopsy.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. Posting on Twitter, the PM wrote “Pained by the loss of lives due to a tragic accident in Ananthapuramu district, AP. Condolences to the bereaved families.” the PM also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF to the next of kin of the deceased.
