Mangaluru: Manager loses Rs 96,996 in QR code scam

Mangaluru: Fraudsters stole Rs 96,996 from the bank account of a manager of a company in Mangaluru using QR code scam. A case related to cyber fraud has been registered in the CEN police station here.
As per the complaint, the manager received phone calls (Ph no 6900789640 and 9735403133) from an unknown person on January 25 claiming himself to be an Indian Army personnel. He sent his ids and contact details on Whatsapp to verify his credentials. The caller requested for 300 bags of cement to be delivered for the work of a school.
After the cement was dispatched, the man promised to pay half the amount in advance and got the manager’s PhonePe number. The fraudster sent a QR code which the manager scanned and sent Rs 1 to verify the account details were correct.
Thereafter, the fraudster again sent 4 other QR codes on WhatsApp. When the victim scanned them, Rs 96,996 was transferred in phases from his bank account in IDFC Bank.
