“Adaptive Traffic Management System” for safer traffic in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: A traffic management system is being planned for the city roads for aiding the ease and safety of vehicular movement.

The new “Adaptive Traffic Management System” will be installed on two corridors — one from Kottara to Mahakalipadpu and the other from Nanthoor to Mahakalipadpu. Modern and smart traffic signals will be installed at the 15 road junctions along these corridors – including Lalbagh, PVS, Hampankatta, Nanthoor, Jyothi.

CBD identified:

The area from Kottara to Mahakalipadpu will be demarcated as a Central Business District (CBD) in the city that has heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. For ensuring smooth flow of traffic the Adaptive Traffic Management System will be installed under the Smart City project, officials said.

Expected benefits:

Unlike now, all the traffic signals will be synchronized. A vehicle will get to stop only at one traffic signal on these corridors once the system is fully operational. The signal duration is calculated automatically, after assessing the traffic density in real-time. Emergency vehicles will also get priority access at traffic signals. Such ‘Synchronised Signal’ model has been successfully implemented in a few roads in Mumbai and Bengaluru, officials said.

Monitoring traffic rule-breaking is another benefit of this system. The smart traffic signals will have video analytic cameras that are enabled with speed detection functionality. These cameras can also pick up traffic infractions such as not wearing helmets and seat belts, jumping signals, overspeeding. With the number plate, police can easily find and fine wrongdoers, officials said.

Proof of Concept undertaken

At present, the tender process for choosing the implementing agency is underway, in which 5 companies have expressed interest. Proof of Concept (POC) process has been done for assessing the suitability. The company selected will maintain the system for a 6-year term.

General Manager of Mangaluru Smart City Project ArunPrabha K S informed that the new signal lights will be installed within 6 months after the tender process is completed.
