Gundlupet (Chamarajanagar district): Several persons were trapped in a landslip at a stone quarry site here on Friday.

It is learned that the incident occurred at 11.30 AM on Friday. Two persons, identified as Maharashtra-based laborers Imran and Bablu,  were still missing, at the time of publishing the news. It was unclear if the two were buried under the debris or escaped from the spot.

After a long search operation, 7 persons were rescued, and four were reported to be injured. Nooruddin, a tipper driver from Kerala,  was trapped under a boulder and was rescued after a 3-hour-long operation. The injured have been admitted to Chamarajanagar Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the manager of the quarry site Naveed has been detained by the police for questioning.

6 tippers, 5 earthmovers (JCB), and 4 tractors were trapped under the mud and boulders in the incident, police said.

District superintendent of police Sivakumar told Udayavani that seven workers have been rescued for the time being. The exact information about the casualties is not known. There is a mining license in the name of Mahendrappa and it is legal, he added.

Villagers hold flash protest:

Some villagers accused that the mining site was being operated without following rules and regulations. They held a flash protest at the site alleging that the illegal mining activities were affecting agricultural yields as well as damaging roads. The crowd dispersed after police intervened.
