Mangaluru: A city-based lady teacher reportedly lost Rs 2.2 lakhs to a scammer on a matrimonial site.
A complaint has been registered against unknown culprits in the case by the aggrieved teacher.
As per reports, the elder brother of the teacher had created her profile on a popular Kannada matrimonial site. The brother also shared her profile details and phone number with a potential suitor who identified himself as Anil Chandra, living in Belgium.
Anil developed a close bond with the lady and talked to her every day. He, on February 23, asked the woman to loan Rs 2.2 lakhs for the medical expenses of one of his relatives who was terminally ill in Jaipur. Trusting him, the victim transferred the money to a Kotak Mahindra Bank account of someone named Dr. Salim Ali. The next day, Anil again asked her to transfer Rs 1 lakh to the same account, to which she reportedly again complied.
The teacher got suspicious when Anil again called her from an India-based number and asked to send Rs 1.15 lakhs for paying customs agents for releasing the cargo.
This time, the woman went to the police and registered a complaint with the police.
