Sagara: A techie’s selfless act of spending his hard-earned money to develop the road leading to his remote village, rather than wait for the government grants, has gained high praise.

Lakshmish Sharma, a software engineer, was moved by the plight of the people of the Kadavinamane area of Majire village in Talaguppa Hobli here. The villagers had to walk on a narrow road for 1.1 kilometers to reach the Kargal main road.

When the villagers approached the gram panchayat for getting a road built with aid from the government, they were told that there was a paucity of funds for the current fiscal year. As the area has only a few residents, it was difficult for the people to pressure representatives for getting a road sanctioned. Grama Panchayat president Kalpana Satish informed that the panchayat, which had undertaken many developmental works in different parts of the village, was helpless due to the sheer size of the village.

After coming to know of the villagers’ difficulties, Lakshmish spent Rs 50,000 from his own pocket to develop a motorable road that reached every household. When people take ownership of the works and join hands, everything can be achieved. It is much better than waiting passively for government grants, he said adding that he was proud to have contributed a little to his village.

When people praise his magnanimity, he humbly says, “I believe I have just paid a bit more tax for the current year.”
