Udupi: In an early morning evection operation on Saturday, municipal officials vacated two restaurants (Zara and Zaitoon) running in an illegal structure in front of the Jamia Mosque in the heart of the city.

Earlier, members of the municipal council had expressed outrage over the delay in the eviction of illegal buildings despite a court order.

At the time of publication, the operation is underway with tight police security.

Earlier there was a scrap shop in front of the Jamia Masjid where the illegal structure stands. Allegations were raised that the land was taken on lease from the mosque and the building was constructed flouting rules. The court had also ordered the demolition of the building several months ago.

It is gathered that the municipal officials have agreed to the request by the eatery owners to allow them to vacate the premises.
