Malpe: A deep-sea fishing boat that set sail from the port at Malpe has sunk in the sea off the Ratnagiri coast in Maharashtra. The 7 fishermen on board have been rescued, sources said.
“Divya Shakthi”, a deep-sea fishing boat owned by Padukere Bhagavandas Kotian, sailed from Malpe on April 10. When the boat was fishing in the waters off Ratnagiri on April 13, a hard object rammed into its hull. The impact punched a hole into the hull and water started gushing into the boat.
An SOS call was relayed to the nearby fishing boats ‘Neeladri’ and ‘Suvarna Chaaya’. The crew — Devendra, Sathish, Madhappa, Navin, Mahendra, Chandrakanta, and Ravi — were later rescued.
The boat later sunk to the bottom of the sea together with the fish catch, diesel engine, and other accessories worth around Rs 70 lakhs.
