Udupi: A scooter rammed into the rear of a bullet tanker parked in the middle of the road at the Hejamady plaza, killing the rider.

Mahesh (27) of Kodavooru in Malpe was returning from Mangaluru after a shopping trip on a Honda Activa scooter on Thursday afternoon. While negotiating traffic, the scooter hit the bullet tanker that was parked in the middle of the highway.

Seriously injured, Mahesh was rushed to a hospital in Mukka. However, the breathed his last without responding to treatment.

Locals blamed the accident on the unauthorized parking of the heavy vehicles at the toll plaza. Heavy vehicles halt at the plaza for taking a rest and for refreshments. In the absence of parking facilities, drivers leave the heavy trucks in the middle of the road.

Locals also balmed the unauthorized shops that have come up on both sides of the road for the present situation. They urged for the immediate eviction of unauthorized businesses.

Thursday’s accident seems to have woken up the toll plaza officials from their slumber. The officials assured to undertake an eviction drive from Friday.

Meanwhile, Padubidri police have registered a case against the driver of the bullet tanker, identified as Karthikeyan.
