Udupi: The construction work of a vented dam and a bridge across the Indrani rivulet has become a bane for the residents of Mathadabettu area here.
The stoppage of water for the works at the Bannanje ward has caused the contaminated water from the rivulet to seep into nearby wells. As a result, the water of around 30 wells in the area is unusable, locals complain.
During the summer months, these wells are a lifeline for the locals of the area. The polluted water has now rendered it unusable and we are suffering due to this, said the locals.
A vented dam for the Indrani rivulet was sanctioned and a financial outlay of Rs one crore was released for the purpose under the Paschima Vahini Scheme. The works are going on in full swing for the same.
However, the works are being done unscientifically and have caused inconvenience to the public, locals say. Moreover, the unbearable stench due to the blockage of the contaminated water flowing in the rivulet has made life a living hell, they said.
Repeated petitions to the concerned authorities have also fallen on deaf ears, the locals lamented.
