Have you ever been fortunate enough to receive a bonus item in a package you ordered online?
How did you feel at the time?
Your experience may not have been as thrilling as Thomas Heller’s, who purchased some used kitchen cabinets on eBay and discovered £1,30,000 (Rs 1.2 crore) stowed away in one of the cabinets.
Heller, who is from Germany, purchased the used cabinets on eBay from an old couple’s estate. According to a report in Newsflash, he was able to reduce the price from £253 to £203.
He had the biggest surprise of his life as a result of the deal. Inside one of the oak veneer cupboards, he discovered two cash boxes.
Inside the cash boxes, he discovered a hidden stockpile of £126,166 in cash.
Did he keep all of the money?
He didn’t do it. Heller turned over the cash boxes to a neighbouring police station, where investigators took the case to district court and launched an inquiry into who put the money in the cabinets.
The investigation is now complete. The money belonged to a 91-year-old woman from Halle, according to the investigation.
Heller purchased the cabinet from a service provider who had sold it on behalf of the previous owner, according to the police spokesperson.
Keeping more than €10 (£8.41) of lost money is considered embezzlement in Germany, and offenders can face up to three years in prison.
However, Heller’s honesty was rewarded thanks to a Good Samaritan clause in the statute, which specifies that he is now eligible for a 3% finders fee worth £3,784.
