World’s largest bottle of whisky set to be auctioned on May 25

This month, the world’s largest bottle of Scotch whisky, a record-breaking 311 liters of 32-year-old Macallan, will go up for auction. ‘The Intrepid’ bottle stands at 5-feet 11-inches tall and will be auctioned by Lyon & Turnbull, an Edinburgh-based auction company. It will be auctioned on May 25 and includes the equivalent of 444 regular bottles.

According to WalesOnline, the bottle is expected to beat the $1.9 million global record for the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold. When it was bottled last year, it was officially certified by Guinness World Records. The auctioneers have now announced that if the future sale raises more than £1.3 million, 25% of the proceeds would be donated to the Marie Curie charity.

Colin Fraser, of Lyon & Turnbull – who will lead the auction, said, “I’m sure there will be significant global interest in the auction of The Intrepid, a unique collection spearheaded by the record-breaking bottling standing at an incredible 5ft 11ins tall. Bidders will have the chance to buy a piece of Scotch whisky history. They will become the owners of an exclusive 32-year-old single-malt Scotch from what is widely regarded as one of the world’s best distilleries, The Macallan.”

The whisky was aged for 32 years in two sister casks in The Macallan’s Speyside storehouse. Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky, a leading independent whisky bottling company, then bottled the liquor last year. The whisky has a smooth texture and a pleasant overall taste, according to the auction house, with some white pepper in the long, warming finish and a hint of French apple tart in the aftertaste.

Meanwhile, Wales Online stated that a limited quantity of special bottle sets was created to celebrate the historic occasion. These are a set of 12 bottles, each filled with the last 32-year-old Macallan whisky from the same casks that were used to produce the world record-breaking bottle. Each bottle is a duplicate of the primary bottle design, with different variants dedicated to each of the project’s explorers.
