Bengaluru: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has allowed for the holding of elections for local bodies. This is a significant order for all local bodies in the state, especially the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

In a case related to Madhya Pradesh, the 3 member Supreme Court bench has allowed for the elections to be held for local bodies as they were conducted the last time. The court also told that the order will be applicable to the whole country, Revenue Minister R Ashok told reporters at the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.

A separate case related to the reservation for Backward Classes is still pending in the Supreme Court. It will be listed after 3 months. However, the present judgment is still significant as the BBMP elections can be held with the status quo maintained, he said.

The elections can be held for 198 wards of the BBMP. The government has issued instructions to the State Election Commission to announce the elections in two week’s time, he added.

Views of Advocate General will be sought on the matter, he added.
