Udupi: Police have solved the murder of a woman and her daughter at Madaga in Athradi Village here within 48 hours.
A special police team arrested the accused Shivamogga’s Bhdravati Bammanakatte-resident Harish R alias Ganesh on May 11 in connection with the murders.
Cheluvi (28) and her daughter Priya (10) were found dead at their residence on May 9. The sister of the deceased lodged a complaint at the Hiriadka police station alleging that both were murdered by strangulation.
The police said Ganesh was married with 2 children. He and the victim were distant relatives. He wanted to marry Cheluvi, who was separated from her husband. He was suspicious and jealous that Chluvi talked to other men, and this had led to quarrels between them.
According to police, On the night of May 8, Ganesh and Cheluvi had a fight over the same matter. In a fit of rage, he strangulated Cheluvi with a dupatta. Fearing that Priya could testify against him, he used the shawl to kill her in her sleep.
He fled from the crime scene with the victim’s mobile phone and gold chain worth Rs 50,000, police said.
