Udupi: Former MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake had to face the wrath of the Yellur villagers on Tuesday, May 24, on the issue of garbage disposal and processing.
The villagers were opposed to the demand for processing garbage from Uchila and Padubidri at the waste treatment plant at Yellur.
On Tuesday, a delegation led by former MLA Sorake visited the waste processing site where they were confronted by a large crowd of villagers. An argument broke out between the villagers and the Congress delegation. Both parties accused the other of physical assault.
According to Sorake, the waste processing plant at Yellur was constructed to handle the garbage collected from Kaup town municipality and the panchayats of Yellur, Padubidri, and Uchila.
The villagers, on the other hand, said they were opposed to the idea because of the environmental concerns. They were facing troubles due to the waste being processed at the facility. The water bodies have been polluted due to the garbage and other pollutants. Any additional waste processing would further harm the environment, they said.
