Udupi: In the backdrop of rising cases of suicides by outsiders in Udupi, the newly appointed ADGP Alok Kumar, on Thursday, said that monitoring will be tightened at the checkposts.

The ADGP agreed that suicide cases are on the rise in the temple town. “The department has taken the suicide issue seriously… A thorough study is needed to find out why Udupi is chosen for suicide,” he said.

Earlier, ADGP Kumar held a discussion with the police officers of the district at Bannanje and took stock of the pressing law and order issues in the district.

Udupi had been at the forefront of the Hijab row agitations, creating a sensitive atmosphere in the district. The ADGP said that the police department was capable of dealing with any law and order issues. he also praised the department for the stellar job of the district police in handling sensitive situations.

“No one should take law and order into their own hands,” he added.

On the delay in the investigation into Contractor Santhosh Patil’s suicide case, Alok Kumar said that there were technical issues that need to be inspected and it will take time. He said that the investigation is looking into all possible angles, before coming to a conclusion.
