Mangaluru: Member of Parliament and BJP State president Nalin Kumar Kateel stressed the need to commemorate the freedom fighters.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the “Amrutha Bharatige Kannada Arati” programme organized jointly by the district administration and the Department of Kannada and Culture on Saturday at the Town Hall.

Nalin said that Indians had to struggle for many years to get back the land ruled by the Mughals and the British. “It was an age of struggle, not a dark age. Many patriots have fought for independence. Their struggle and sacrifice is the reason behind the self-respect we enjoy today,” he said.

In his speech, Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra KV said that the youth need to know the history of freedom struggle and freedom fighters. If we forget history, history will forget us. Young people should learn about the nation’s past. Visit surrounding historical sites and put in efforts to understand historical events, he said.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath said the special program of lighting the lamp (Aarati) at 75 locations across the state has been arranged to celebrate the 75 years of freedom.

A colourful procession was also held as part of the event.
