CCTVs to supervise city bus timings in Mangaluru

PTI, May 30, 2022, 2:30 PM IST

Mangaluru: The city bus operators’ association has decided to adopt technology to solve the constant bickering among the bus operators about the bus timings.

There were complaints from the commuters and operators alike about the non-adherence to the timings by many of the buses plying on city routes. There were instances where the bus crew clashed on roads about the timings. Though timekeepers were appointed at key bus stops, there was no end to the quarrels.

The police department had also issued several notices to solve the issue of public importance.

To put an end to this, the Coastal Zone City Bus Owners’ Association has decided to adopt CCTV technology to enforce bus timings. In the first phase, a solar-powered CCTV has already been installed at Nanthoor, with approval from the police department, for monitoring the movement of buses.

The standalone CCTV set is powered by a solar panel mounted on a pole at a height of around 15 feet. Cameras of 3-megapixel resolution record the footage and store it on a 128 GB memory card. It is also fitted with a 5G WiFi router with a mobile SIM card to transmit the footage for remote monitoring.

Ramachandra Pilar, the principal secretary of the association, told Udyavani that the association plans install solar-powered CCTV cameras set up at 4 other locations, including 2 at Surathkal, and one at the KSRTC Bejai city bus stop, and another at Lalbagh.

The aim is to avoid and resolve conflicts by ensuring the coordination between the bus crew and owners about time management, he added.
