Fire in tanker carrying acid after tyre burst; Major tragedy averted

Kaup: Quick action by alert toll gate personnel and locals averted a major tragedy at Katapady junction when a tyre of a tanker carrying a chemical burst and caught fire on June 16.

At the time of the incident, the tanker was carrying industrial hydrochloric acid from Maharashtra to Mangaluru. As it reached the petrol Bunk at Katapady on NH66, one of its hind tyres burst and caught fire.

The fire was immediately noticed by the tollgate personnel who were on rounds and quickly got into action. The fire was doused with the help of locals averting the mishap from turning into a major tragedy.

A video of the incident went viral on social media. Netizens lauded the quick actions of the personnel in extinguishing the fire.
