An insensitive Tweet about NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu has landed Bollywood film-maker Ram Gopal Verma in soup.

The controversial Tweet made on June 22 read: “If Droupadi is the President who are the Pandavas? And more importantly who are the Kauravas?”

The crass remarks invite sharp criticism and backlash for the filmmaker online. The BJP leaders also fumed at the “insulting” remarks about their presidential candidate.

According to media reports, Telangana BJP leader G Narayana Reddy registered a police complaint against Ram Gopal Verma at the Abids Police Station on the derogatory Tweet. The complaint alleged that Varma’s remarks were “extremely insulting and degrading” to Droupadi Murmu who is an experienced politician and former governor of Jharkhand.

Reddy urged invoking the provisions of the SC/ST Act against RGV.

Meanwhile, RGV took to Twitter to issue a clarification on the matter. He said his Twitter post was “not at all intended to hurt the sentiments of anyone.”

The Tweet read: “This was said in irony and not intended in any other way. Draupadi in Mahabharata is my favourite character (sic) but since the name is such a rarity, I just remembered the associated characters and hence my expression. Not at all intended to hurt sentiments of anyone,” he tweeted.
