Puttur: “The experts are of the opinion that drilling borewells in large numbers might be the reason for the repeated earthquakes in Madikeri and Sullia”, said Minister of State for Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Transport Department of Karnataka S Angara.
Addressing the media on Saturday, he said, “Earlier the borewell drilling process was only upto 200 meters, but now it has reached 1000 meters. When compared to the earlier situation, borewell drilling has seemingly increased, in the recent past. Borewell drilling is necessary, but only if needed”.
He said that the experts were already deployed to study the pattern of the series of earthquakes that struck Sullia and Madikeri. He also said the study report will be submitted to the Centre and the state.
Meanwhile, the minister said that the experts had confirmed the quakes were milder and that the patterns are closely monitored.
