Malpe: The beaches of Malpe, devoid of tourists during monsoon, have a new kind of visitors. People can be seen spread out on the beaches at Malpe, searching for something in the sand washed by the sea waves. If one asks them what they are doing, they reply “We are searching for lost gold.”
They claim that tourists often lose their valuables while swimming at the beach, which get buried in the sands. These valuables, including gold ornaments, resurface during the rainy season, the huge wave created by the monsoon winds. Thus, began the beach treasure hunt.
The question about the gold they have collected so far, however, goes unanswered. Despite this, the hunt for gold continues all day until the last light.
DC, MLA inspect damage by sea erosion
Meanwhile, sea erosion has intensified at the beaches of Muloor-Thottam, just south of Malpe. Udupi Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao and MLA Lalaji R. Mendon surveyed the damage caused by the sea waves. They also listened to the grievances of the locals. A discussion was held with the fisheries and port officials and contractors about the emergency measures that could be taken to slow the advancing sea.
